Centering Families, Creating Possibility

‍ ‍

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a time to recognize the importance of strong families and supportive communities where every child can grow up safe, healthy, and cared for.

At Cumberland Youth & Family Services, we believe prevention starts long before a crisis. It happens in everyday moments when families have access to the support they need. When a parent learns a new way to respond, when a child feels safe and understood, when a family has someone walking alongside them, that is prevention in action.

Pinwheels of Possibility reminds us that when families are at the center, the possibilities are endless. The pinwheel is a symbol of hope. It represents the care, connection, and support that help children and families thrive. Every turn reflects the role we all play in building a safer future for children.

At Cumberland, prevention is part of our daily work. Through supervised visitation, families are given a safe and structured space to reconnect. These visits are not only about time together, but about guidance, support, and learning in the moment. Staff help model healthy interactions and provide real-time coaching, helping parents build confidence and strengthen their relationships with their children.

Through TBRI® training and coaching, caregivers learn practical tools that focus on connection, regulation, and trust. This approach helps adults understand behavior through a trauma-informed lens and respond in ways that meet a child’s underlying needs. Over time, these small shifts create more stability in the home and stronger, more secure attachments.

Our Community Counseling Program creates space for individuals and families to process experiences and build healthy coping skills. Counseling supports both healing and prevention. When individuals are able to work through trauma and develop new patterns, they are less likely to carry those challenges forward into future relationships or parenting.

When families are supported, children are safer. When we invest in prevention, we help create lasting change that reaches beyond one moment or one family.

This Friday, we invite you to join us for Go Blue Day. Wear blue to show your support for child abuse prevention and stand with children and families in our community. Together, we can raise awareness, strengthen families, and help ensure every child has the opportunity to grow up safe, supported, and full of possibility.
