Individual Volunteer Opportunity Descriptions

Childcare For Family Programs

Childcare is a vital role that allows our single parents to participate in required programming. Childcare is held on Wednesday nights between 6:45 - 8:30 pm. Creating a supportive and welcoming relationship with single parents will be vital to our program’s success. Consistency is key!

• Ages vary between toddler – 17 years old
• We typically have between 10-25 children in our care
• Help with dinner time.
• Play games, read, craft, play sports, help with homework, or go to the park with the residents.
• Clean up after residents leave
• Ensure the safety of all residents in our care.
• Be a positive role model to all residents by modeling good listening, empathy, respect, good manners, and maintaining excellent boundaries.

Tutor for Children’s Residential Program

Tutors are responsible for helping our residents with homework and preparing for tests in all subjects. Residents may come to homework time without work. Our Education Specialist will provide worksheets or activity for residents to work on. You may work with more than one resident during your hour on campus. Homework time is Monday – Thursday 7-8pm. There is no homework time on days that residents are out of school. We follow the Denton ISD Calendar.

• Grade levels vary from kindergarten through high school, but are predominantly middle and high school.
• Review class material with students by discussing the text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
• Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
• Be a positive role model to all residents by modeling good listening, empathy, respect, good manners, and maintaining excellent boundaries.

Administrative

Cumberland staff is focused on caring for our residents. From time to time, we need help with administrative tasks. The administrative volunteers play a crucial role in providing an extra set of hands when needed. Administrative assistance tasks are completed Monday-Friday 9 am - 6 pm. This is an as-needed role.

• Will support various departments with organization, cleaning, sorting, filing, mailing, making copies, and more.
• Must understand that it is imperative to keep all information that volunteer comes in contact with highly confidential.

Young Adult Activities

Our Supervised Independent Living Program residents, young adults in extended foster care, have a variety of hobbies and like to learn new things. Do you have a hobby or life skill that you can bring to our campus and teach our residents? Contact the Advancement Coordinator to discuss what you would like to do.

• Teach residents yoga, art, play sports, cook, garden, crochet…
• Teach residents how to change a tire, create a budget, do taxes, create a resume
• Talk to our residents about your career. How did you get to where you are today?

Birthday Card Program

Our residents have experienced trauma, abuse or hardship. Birthdays aren’t always the celebrations they should be. For some, birthdays are often painful reminders of loss. Some of our residents may have never received a birthday card or have had a birthday party. By sending a birthday card you are telling our residents that you care. The message of care is important to their therapeutic treatment and long-term success.

• Birthday cards can be specific to the Monthly Birthday List provided or generic to be used at any time.
• We understand the desire to put items in the birthday cards you send. However, we cannot accept cash, gift cards or any other items placed on individual cards.
• A gift, in any amount to our Annual Fund, would help us ensure every child receives the hope and healing they deserve, on their birthday and always. Give today!
• Sending birthday cards is great for individuals and for groups alike.

Special Events And Fundraisers

Throughout the year, Cumberland hosts a number of special events in which we welcome the community to be a part of. Without the help of our volunteers these events would not be possible. Ages of volunteers may vary for this particular opportunity.

• Assist with on campus and off campus events.
• Special Events can be galas, fundraisers, holiday parties, and more.
• Some roles within this opportunity could be welcoming guests, logging data, setting up,
tearing down, managing an activity.
• Training will be provided for each role.

Sponsor A Meal Or Outing

Our residents love to experience sporting events, movies, amusement parks, dinner, and more. Providing the opportunity to our residents to go on an outing or have dinner ordered in helps normalization. Work with your groups to bring a smile to residents’ faces.

• Make a donation or order a meal for delivery. Contact the Advancement Coordinator to make arrangements.
• Provide tickets or a meal for all residents to participate in an outing.
• Make a donation towards an outing or meal for all residents.
• Provide gift cards to be used at a restaurant or outing location.

Organize A Donation Drive

Donation drives allow for family, friends, coworkers, and community members to come together to provide a large donation of items that Cumberland needs at any given time. It is a great way to make an impact on our residents. Contact the Advancement Coordinator to determine the biggest need at the time of your drive.
