Behind the Couch: Jason Smith, Therapist at Cumberland’s Lewisville Counseling Location
Behind the Couch: Meet Jason
This month, we’re excited to spotlight Jason, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist–Associate (LMFT-A) who provides counseling services through Cumberland’s Community Counseling Program at our City of Lewisville location. Jason brings a thoughtful, client-centered approach to therapy and is deeply committed to making mental health support accessible, safe, and affirming for individuals and families in our community. We asked Jason a few questions about his approach to therapy, his work in community counseling, and what guides him as a practitioner.
Quick Q&A
What drew you specifically to community-based counseling, especially with individuals and families who may be underinsured or uninsured?
“I believe that mental health should not be a luxury afforded to only a section of the population. Community-based counseling will always be important to me (and hopefully to society!) because it’s one small step toward making that help accessible to everyone.”
What does being "trauma-informed" mean to you?
“To me, being trauma-informed means being aware, being responsive, and being proactive. There are a few things that any person in therapy would benefit from, like emotional safety or reliability. But for each person, there can be any number of other things specific to just you. I consider it my job not just to respond to those needs, but to actively anticipate them in order to maintain a safe environment for you.”
How does Cumberland's mission influence the way you show up for clients in your work as a therapist?
“I primarily see Cumberland’s mission as a responsibility to support our community. Therapy is a great fit for meeting that responsibility, because it provides what we therapists call ‘unconditional positive regard.’ That’s just a fancy way of saying we’re on your team, no matter what.”
Outside of work, what is something that brings you joy or helps you recharge?
“I absolutely live on music, and I love a good audiobook. And I find both of those things are best enjoyed on a walk or hike. When I’m feeling social, I love to spend time with family, or play Dungeons and Dragons with friends and colleagues.”
What is one misconception about therapy or mental health support you wish more people understood?
“The main misconception I see out in the world is the idea that therapists are somehow all-knowing, or experts at giving advice. In some instances, that’s true. For example, we might help you stay safe, learn to set healthy boundaries, or remind you that you actually did accomplish your goals. But most of the time, being an “expert” means we’re experts at doing therapy, which means asking the right questions to help you find your own answers.”
What Therapeutic Approaches or theories do you most often draw from in your work, and what about them resonates with you?
“I most often draw from Solution-Focused therapy. This approach resonates with me because it’s all about curiosity, imagination, and painting a clear picture of what your preferred future can look like.”
